fireCore has rolled out an updated version of Seas0nPass for Apple TV (second-generation) owners adding support for the latest OS version (5.1). Seas0nPass is a jailbreak tool which allows Apple TV owners to install and run third-party applications and plug-ins.

fireCore made the news official on their blog yesterday, stating “Today we're happy to release new versions of Seas0nPass and aTV Flash (black) that are compatible with latest 5.0 (iOS 5.1) software running on the ATV2…”

“…A ton of work has gone into getting everything updated,” said the company, crediting a number of individuals who helped out with the development of Seas0nPass 0.8.3.

Before Apple TV owners rush to buy the $30 hack, fireCore thoughtfully outlines the benefits that come with Apple’s iOS 5.0 / 5.1, as some customers may not even want the new version:

What's new in the 5.0 AppleTV software? Should I update?

New interface: Fast, visual access to all content choices Movie purchases in iCloud: Support for buying movies on Apple TV and playing back purchased movies from iCloud Genius Recommendations: Recommendations for content on the iTunes Store based on previous rentals and purchases Screensaver photos: New National Geographic photos built-in for screensaver On-device sign-up: On-device sign up for content partners on Apple TV using your Apple ID

In fact, fireCore downright states that “Updating to the new 5.0 software is not required, and all aTV Flash (black) features will continue to be supported on AppleTV versions 4.2 and later.”

The company then proceeds to outline which plugins are currently supported on 5.0 (visit the fireCore blog for the full rundown).

As for the aTV Flash “supercharger”, the new 1.4.1 version also supports the new Apple TV OS.

For those asking whether the third-generation Apple TV is supported, fireCore is sad to inform that “Work is still ongoing for the ATV3, and we hope to have more news soon.” They encourage fans to follow them on Twitter to learn when they finally crack Apple’s newest black box.

Fans of fireCore’s work should note that Seas0nPass currently provides a tethered jailbreak for the new 5.0 (iOS 5.1) AppleTV software.

The developers explain that both jailbreak types are identical from a functional point of view, and that “the only difference being that a tethered jailbreak requires the AppleTV to be connected to a Mac/PC when first powering it on.”

“Since the AppleTV doesn't have a battery, and is rarely ever powered off, this usually only needs to be done once,” says fireCore.

Seas0nPass 0.8.3 is available as a free download from Seas0nPass.com, while aTV Flash (black) 1.4.1 can be obtained from the Apple TV interface from the user’s account, under the Downloads tab.
