On September 9, the FFmpeg developers had the great pleasure of announcing the release and immediate availability for download of the FFmpeg 2.8 open-source and cross-platform software used for recording, converting, and streaming audio and video.

Dubbed Feynman, FFMpeg 2.8 comes with a wide variety of new features, among which we can mention a BFSTM and BCSTM demuxer, Hap decoder and encoder, an ssim filter, a colorkey video filter, a showvolume filter, support for Go2Meeting decoding, a removegrain video filter, a libkvazaar HEVC encoder, and a deband filter.

Furthermore, the new FFmpeg version adds an optional ASF demuxer, supports AAC fixed-point decoding, implements VAAPI and VDPAU hevc hwaccel, adds a little-endian ADPCM_THP decoder, improves the JPEG 2000 decoder, and introduces support for Intel QSV-accelerated MPEG-2 and VC-1 video, as well as HEVC decoding.

The default WebM encoders were replaced with the modern VP9 and Opus ones, the JPEG 2000 encoder is no longer considered experimental, there's now support for DNx100 (1440x1080@8) and OS X VideoToolbox, along with a bitstream filter that can be used to convert HEVC from the MP4 file format to Annex B.
