The developers of the feren OS GNU/Linux distribution are kicking off the month of May 2017 with a brand new release of their Linux Mint-based operating system.

feren OS 2017.0 "Murdock" is now available after being in development for the past several months, it's based on the latest Linux Mint 18.1 "Serena" operating system, which in turn is derived from Canonical's Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) OS, and uses the Cinnamon 3.2 desktop environment by default.

The biggest new feature of the feren OS 2017.0 "Murdock" release is the implementation of feren Welcome, the project's in-house built welcome screen that lets newcomers more easily get started with the GNU/Linux distribution once they manage to install it on their personal computers.

As expected, feren Welcome replaces the Mint Welcome tool from Linux Mint. Another change targeted at newcomers to this OS is the look of the default desktop icons, making it easier for them to access the Dark Mode, Themer, and Welcome Screen to customize their installations as they see fit.

Talking about Themer, the in-house built tool that lets feren OS users customize the look and feel of their operating system, received a revamp in this release, making your life a lot easier and bring you up-to-date themes and the ability to preview each theme before applying it.

Bug fixes, latest software updates

According to the release announcement, all the core components and applications included in the feren OS 2017.0 "Murdock" release have been updated to their latest version at the moment of writing this article. Same goes for all the pre-installed icon sets and desktop themes, which now work properly under Cinnamon 3.2.

Numerous bugs and issues reported by users since the previous release of the operating system were addressed, including the infamous mouse bug. Additionally, automatic updates have been enabled by default to keep users' installations up to date at all times when new security patches are available in the repos.

A list of known issues and their workarounds are available in the release notes, from where you can also download the feren OS 2017.0 "Murdock" Live ISO image, which supports only 64-bit computers. Check out the distro's homepage to get started with feren OS and see which computers are known to be supported.
