iPhone 6 Plus starts overheating while in pants pocket

Reports of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 catching fire are no longer making the rounds these days, but instead we’re seeing more and more iPhones that are involved in similar incidents, some of which are very close to causing injuries to their owners.

This is what happened in a case brought forward by Click2Houston, which reports that an iPhone 6 Plus that was carried around in the pocket by a girl nearly caught fire all of a sudden.

Randy Veazey explained that his daughter’s iPhone was in the pocket when it started overheating for no clear reason, so the girl pulled it out of the pocket and threw it on the ground.

“Smoke was billowing out. It smelled really bad. So she yanked it out, it was too hot to hold, so she threw it on the ground,” Veazey explains.

The iPhone started emitting smoke, causing a strong burning smell, most likely due to the melting internals. The outcome of the fire can be seen in the photos included in the article, as the screen detached from the rest of the body, but it’s not yet clear if the battery exploded or not.

Bendgate anyone?

Given the fact that this is an iPhone 6 Plus, the same one that was impacted by the #bendgate, it’s possible that the device bent in the girl’s pocket and this caused it to overheat for no apparent reason.

It goes without saying that the man is terrified that a phone nearly exploded in his daughter’s pocket, so he’s now swearing that he’ll never buy an iPhone again. Or a Samsung, that is.

“I mean, she could have been asleep, you know, you know how kids are, they could be asleep with the phone in the bed. Even worse, it could have been laying down when it did this and everyone asleep it could have caught fire,” Veazey said.

Of course, the man already took the phone to the Apple Store for a closer inspection and the engineers there started an investigation, with more information to be provided to the owner directly in a couple of days. For the rest of us, it remains just a case of an iPhone that nearly caught fire, as Apple didn’t provide any statement regarding this incident.

Thanks for the tip!
