Linux users couldn't download Battle.net for a short while

Activision and Blizzard had a "bumpy" relationship with the Linux community and its gamers, and it happened more than once to see Linux players banned from playing emulated versions of the games. A false alarm was raised over the weekend, but it was just that.

A user reported that Linux users were no longer able to download the Battle.net app that is used to download and install the Blizzard games. As you can imagine, a lot of people were upset when this happened, citing previous issues with Blizzard. As it happens, Blizzard is aware that a lot of Linux users are playing their games, even if it's not a native platform. Their system is no longer banning users with Wine, so it stands to reason that it was only some sort of mistake.

"Hi, I'm having some trouble accessing the downloads page. If I visit https://us.battle.net/account/management/download/ from a browser that has the OS portion of the user-agent missing or atypical, I get an error message. This also happens if the OS portion is anything except Windows or OSX. I'm no web designer, but it looks to me like the web server just fails hard when it doesn't exactly recognize the user-agent," wrote one of the Linux players on the official battle.net forums.

Blizzard responded and fixed the issues right away

One of the developers noticed the complaint and the issue were fixed right away. "We released a new version of the downloader page last week. Evidently there is a bug in some new platform/browser detection routines. We'll get it sorted out ASAP. Thanks for letting us know!" As it stands right now, download the Battle.net app should work. If by any chance you find that it doesn't work, you should contact the developers.

All the games from Blizzard, including the latest Diablo 3 and its expansion, works just fine with the latest Wine version, and you can always give it a shot.
