Any dummy can now rent their own ransomware package

The expression "what would they think of next" seems to perfectly fit this latest story, in which a group of hackers decided to set up a Web service that lets anyone build their own version of the CryptoLocker ransomware.

The service is available on the Dark Net, via a special .onion domain, and allows anyone to sign up, create an account, and assemble a ransomware strain based on the old CryptoLocker family.

Each registered user has two options they can tweak. They can choose their desired ransom fee and the Bitcoin wallet address where payments will arrive.

The people behind this operation call themselves the FAKBEN team. According to a statement on their website, the payments will go through their servers, where they'll keep 10% of all the paid ransom fees, and send the rest to the people that rented their services.

This is not a complete ransomware-as-a-service platform since users are still required to spread the ransomware among victims.

"Is not our interest who will be infected or which kind of methods you will do, is important for you to use brain and intelligence in order to spread it," FAKBEN team states on their website. "We will keep on working in the settings of the cryptolocker, improving methods for undetection to AV. We will give all the support that costumers need through Jabber service."
