Facebook users have been asking for this option for the News Feed for years, but they're testing it for Messenger

Facebook is finally testing that dislike button the world has been pestering it about for years. It's just not going to be used for reacting to posts like everyone thought it would.

Instead, the dislike button will come up in chat threads. In short, Facebook wants you to attach emojis to your friends' messages in pretty much the same way you do with News Feed posts. The "Like" button is already there and has been for a while now, so it's not exactly that far-fetched that Facebook wants to switch things up and add more reactions to private messages.

How does it work? Well, when you hover over a message a friend sent you in Facebook Messenger, you can tap the emoji button to pick one from a series of emojis - thumbs up, thumbs down, heart-eyes, lol, wow, sad or angry.

The feature is currently being tested by Facebook, which is something the company confirmed to TechCrunch. "We're always testing ways to make Messenger more fun and engaging. This is a small test where we enable people to share an emoji that best represents their feelings on a message," Facebook's reps said.

Testing, testing

That's pretty much what Facebook always says when a feature is in testing, and they don't know yet if the people who have access to it will like it or not.

People have been asking for a dislike button for years now. It's been something that the company has always denied users, rolling out the reactions we all know about a year ago - like, love, wow, lol, sad and angry. While people have embraced them all already, there's still that desire to have the option to dislike something rather than offer any other type of reaction. Hopefully, after this new feature rolls out to all users (if it does), they might also consider adding "dislike" to the News Feed reaction list too.
