Facebook has decided to discontinue its Paper newsreader application from iOS App Store after it failed to attract a large audience. Today, Facebook has announced that the app will go dark starting July 29, and it will be removed from the App Store later today.

Paper was the company's attempt to bring the news to people who use Facebook. It was a standalone application that allowed users to customize the news they wanted to read, based on the topics that interested them most, including politics, food, technology, and many more. The Verge reports that the app will no longer function after July 29 and that Facebook will remove it from the App Store later today.

Facebook reported 1.09 billion daily users this year, but it seems that Paper didn't manage to rank among the 1,500 most downloaded applications of 2016. In fact, Facebook didn't even introduce an Android version, which points to the fact that the company may have taken the decision to discontinue the app a while ago.

Facebook Paper was released in 2014 on the App Store

Facebook Paper debuted in 2014, first in the US and then in the rest of the world. The application was designed to mix the most important information in the user's news feed with the top stories of the day.

The app was divided into multiple sections and featured stories that included images and even videos. Users had the option to pick from various topics that they were interested in, and Facebook did a good job of updating Paper with all sort of new features.

More precisely, shortly after its launch, it received a major update with photo editing and photo tags for creating posts and adding people who are part of them. Hashtags were used for finding content on a specific subject faster, very much like on Twitter. Facebook Paper was last updated in March of last year.
