Voice calling is already available on other platforms

Facebook's Messenger application is one of the latest that introduced free voice calling for users. WhatsApp made the same move slightly earlier, while other instant messenger apps are likely to follow soon.

However, neither Facebook Messenger nor WhatsApp have the voice calling feature available to Windows Phone users. All other Messenger and WhatsApp users can enjoy this free feature on other platforms, but not on Windows Phone.

Well, it looks like Facebook has just admitted that bringing VoIP on Windows Phone operating system is something beyond its programming skills.

Which is why the Facebook Messenger team is now looking for someone to help bring the long-awaited feature to Windows Phone platform, WindowsBlogItalia reports. Here is the company's job post that confirms the information:

“Facebook is scaling out a free voice calling product in Messenger, that will revolutionize how people connect and use their smartphones. Our vision is to connect over a billion people by voice and we’re growing incredibly fast.

“At the heart of this is Real Time Communication (RTC) Engine which responsible for making Voip calls happen on phones by hanging state, networking, media capture, processing, compression and transmission.

“Facebook is looking for a Software Engineer to make the Facebook Real Time Communication (RTC) Engine work on Windows phone and Windows. This will involve hooking up Audio/Video capturer and renderer for RTC engine on the Windows platform, make sure it is performant, make windows specific optimizations to the codebase.”

It will take some time until voice calling arrives

Obviously, this means that Windows Phone fans using Facebook Messenger will have to wait a while longer for free voice calling to arrive on their device.

On the bright side, it looks like Facebook is really interested in bringing its Windows Phone apps on par with those on the other platforms.

Once Facebook finds the right person for the job, we expect voice calling for Messenger to be delivered in the beta version of the app. Let's hope Windows Phone users will get the feature sooner rather than later.
