Facebook has been testing a new design for its Messenger application on Android for quite a long time. There have been lots of beta builds released in the last couple months, but until now, developers have not offered an ETA for the launch of the stable version.

Today, Head of Messenger David Marcus has announced that the team behind the application has finished working on the new Material Design look.

Those who have been waiting for the new version of Messenger to arrive on their Android devices will have to wait a few more days since this is a staged rollout.

“If you're using Messenger on Android, you've been wanting a brand new material design for a bit. Any major redesign of an essential app used by hundreds of millions of people around the world is painstakingly hard, and that's why we took every precaution to ensure you'd truly enjoy this evolution.”

“This brand new design will be rolling out later today! As always, give it a try, and let us know what you think, and how we can make it even better for you!” says David Marcus.

Lots of visual changes, but no new features

The new look of Messenger for Android implies a range of Material Design elements, along with a floating button that enables users to start new chats more quickly and easily.

However, aside from the new visual changes announced by Facebook, there aren't any new features included in the upcoming update.

As mentioned earlier, keep you eyes on the Google Play Store since the latest version of Messenger should start rolling out to compatible devices later today.

If you don't have the application yet, you can now download Messenger for Android for free via Google Play store. The application should be fully compatible with all devices running Android 4.0 and up.
