Facebook rolls out new tool to simplify account security

Facebook announced the overall availability of its Security Checkup feature, which it has been testing on a limited userbase for a few months.

This new feature has started rolling out today, and in the coming weeks it is expected to show up at the top of news feeds for all of its desktop-based users.

The tool will be displayed as a notification that says "Stay Secure on Facebook" and users can either dismiss it or activate it to take advantage of a quick security inspection.

The Security Checkup tool doesn't include any new, ground-breaking features, but simply repackages the settings and options from the classic Settings -> Security page into a more user appealing popup.

Here three main sections prompt the user to log out any unused apps or computers, turn on login alerts for unauthorized devices or browsers, and also quickly change the account's password.

The whole process has been designed to be very friendly to non-technical users, includes lots of images and clear controls, and will introduce newer users to the security controls from the settings panel, a place where very few members venture on a regular basis.

If you'd like to trigger a Security Checkup right away and you're not seeing the warning popup, this can be done from a special page in the Facebook Help section.

Mobile users don't worry, Facebook hasn't forgotten you, especially after yesterday's 2015 Q2 results, and will be launching Security Checkup with its mobile apps pretty soon as well.
