Almost $100 million was paid for a nine weeks old app

Facebook has just purchased a new app called tbh that’s supposedly aimed at teenagers that just want to be nice to other people.

tbh stands for To Be Honest and it’s one of the most viral apps at this moment. More than a billion messages have been exchanged through tbh, and it’s seen exponential growth. So much so that Facebook became very much interested in it and bought it.

What sets the application apart from everything else is that it’s not just another messaging app with social features. It’s not about taking pictures of the food, or any of the stuff that worked for other apps. It’s all about giving positive feedback in an anonymous way, and to make people feel better.

Facebook wants to make a good impression

People might not know this, but Facebook buys a lot of stuff, all the time. One of the most prolific acquisition was that of Whatsapp, although since they seemed to remain largely independent, users have kind of forgot about that.

Since there is nothing like tbh, the new app should fit right in the Facebook family. Since this is about giving positive feedback to people you don’t know, it has the potential to do a lot of good.

According to a BBC report, Facebook paid a little over $100 million for the company. The app was released just nine weeks ago, and it had a few million downloads. Its creators promised that it will remain independent and that they will continue to add the features they want or need.

“Over the last few weeks, over 5 million people have downloaded tbh and sent over a billion messages. More importantly, we've been inspired by the countless stories where tbh helped people recover from depression and form better relationships with friends,” wrote the creators of the apps.

It remains to be seen if this is just one of the numerous acquisitions for Facebook that don’t lead anywhere, or if it will become the next best thing.
