New logo is easier to read on mobile devices

One of Facebook's product designers, Christophe Tauziet, has leaked a photo on Twitter detailing the company's new logo, a collaboration between Facebook's in-house design team and Eric Olson, founder and typeface designer at Process Type Foundry.

Coincidentally, Process Type Foundry is also the same type foundry that provided Facebook with Klavika Bold, the font used in the company's previous logo iteration.

Usually, when you see a company of Facebook's status revealing a new logo, you also get a meaty press release and a lot more samples, and not just a photo of the logo applied to a rolled-up T-shirt on your main competitor's website.

With a day under its belt, we can say that the new logo wasn't that well received, people feeling attached to Facebook's previous logo, in usage for ten years. And that's a very weird statement to get behind, knowing that the actual Facebook logo hasn't appeared on the Facebook website for years, being used only on documents, signage, or media releases.

For years, the logo used on the Facebook site has been the letter "f," but most people still remember the full Facebook woodmark (logotype) from days long gone, when the social network wasn't the behemoth it is today.

The logo's update targets users on mobile devices primarily

In a statement for the Brand New blog, known for its awesome logo reviews, Josh Higgins, Facebook creative director said, "While we explored many directions, ultimately we decided that we only needed an update, and not a full redesign."

This was done by giving the logo's font a facelift, with significant changes to the letters "a," "c," "b," and "o."

Overall, the logo's letters (called glyphs) are generally thinner, a change that was made to improve visibility on mobile devices, in the cases where the full logo needed to be displayed.

If you generally have no thoughts on the new Facebook logo, you can check this Creative Bloq article and Designer News thread, where well-known designers and other industry professionals give their opinions on the new logotype.
