What is eyeOS? Imagine that you can have a virtual computer with all your important files and all you have to do to access it, is to open a web browser and log-in into your desktop, that it's exactly how you left it when you used it from another computer. This is eyeOS! A free, cross-platform Personal Content Manager System based upon the style of a Desktop Operating System. It includes applications for your daily needs, such as a calendar, file manager, text editor, calculator or Internet browser.

Nine months ago, when I interviewed one of the eyeOS developers (Pau Garcia-Milà), he explained the eyeOS evolution: "The next step for the project is the eyeOS 1.0 milestone, and for reaching it, some small steps, like finishing the new developer platform and improving the actual 0.9 series, must be made. We think that eyeOS 1.0 must be a complete system for a wide variety of groups: Companies, Schools, Home users... For everyone who would like to be able to access its digital life from many different places. And this is, I think, all of us, so eyeOS 1.0 must have lots of improvements, in both the system and the base applications, with some new base apps (that may be released also for actual 0.9 series) like a default Mail Reader, a better File Manager and Import/Export functions for all the base apps. Also, a function to synchronize the eyeOS with the local PC and vice versa will be added to eyeOS 1.0."

Today is that day, and eyeOS 1.0 (codename Dahila) was released after months of hard work. This version of eyeOS is completely changed and rewritten from scratch. The desktop looks very clean, simple and beautiful, but trust me when I say that it's very powerful. All the applications are now divided in five big categories like Office, Network, Accessories, Games or Places.

■ eyeCalendar - Scheduler application
■ eyeContacs - Address book
■ eyeNav - Web browser
■ eyeRSS - RSS/Atom aggregator
■ eyeCalc - Desktop calculator
■ eyeNotes - Notepad-like application
■ eyeChess - Chess game
■ eyeProcess - Task Manager

All you need to run eyeOS is an Internet connection and a modern web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Konqueror or Safari. On the other hand, to install eyeOS, you will need to have a 24/7 web server with PHP4 or better.
