It is built around the MATE 1.8.2 desktop environment

Arne Exton, the creator of numerous GNU/Linux and Android-x86 distributions, has informed us earlier about the immediate availability for download of a new build for his Exton|OS Linux distribution based on the Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) and Debian 8 (Jessie) operating systems.

According to Mr. Exton, Exton|OS Build 150719 upgrades the kernel packages from kernel 3.19.0-14-exton to kernel 4.0.0-4-exton, which is based on the upstream Linux 4.0.7 kernel, it uses the MATE 1.8.2 desktop environment, and replaces Ubuntu’s Ubiquity installation program with the Exton|OS Installer, a clone of the Debian Live Installer project.

"A new and much better version of Exton|OS is ready. I have replaced kernel 3.19.0-14-exton with kernel 4.0.0-4-exton – Kernel.org‘s kernel 4.0.7," says Arne Exton. "With kernel 4.0 there is no real need to use Nvidia proprietary graphic drivers since this kernel has better support for the open-source Nvidia driver Nouveau than any other older kernel."

The Live ISO image features persistence

Exton|OS Build 150719 with MATE is available for download as a hybrid-ISO image only for modern 64-bit computers. The hybrid-ISO image allows users to deploy the live Linux distribution on either a USB flash drive of 2GB or higher capacity, or a DVD disc. Exton|OS is also distributed as a Kiosk edition for public environments, as well as a flavor with the Openbox window manager.

You can use the distro in live mode with persistence, so you can reuse the bootable medium whenever you want, but only if you're booting from a USB stick, or install it permanently on a local disk drive. Download Exton|OS Build 150719 (MATE) right now from Softpedia and read the entire release announcement for more details.
