GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton has released a new version of his Ubuntu-based Exton|OS operating system, build 160728. The Exton|OS Light edition has been updated and uses the Openbox window manager.

Based on Canonical's recently released Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS (Xenial Xerus) distribution, Exton|OS Light Build 160728 also borrows various GNU/Linux technologies from the Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" (Testing) and Debian GNU/Linux Sid (Unstable) software repositories, and employs a kernel from the Linux 4.6 series.

"My special kernel 4.6.0-9-exton is equivalent to kernel.org’s Linux kernel 4.6.4. You can download 'my' kernel if you want to use it in another Ubuntu/Debian system," says Arne Exton in the official release announcement. "Exton|OS Light is totally compatible with Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS 'Xenial Xerus' and therefore uses Ubuntu’s repositories."

Here's what's new in Exton|OS Light Build 160728

New features of the Exton|OS Light Build 160728 release include the latest version of the Openbox window manager, Google Chrome web browser for watching Netflix movies, NetworkManager connection manager, PCManFM file manager, Gparted partition editor, and LXTerminal terminal emulator from the LXDE desktop environment.

The Synaptic Package Manager is the default graphical package manager for installing additional apps or updating existing ones. Exton|OS Light Build 160728 also comes with persistence support when using the live operating system directly from a USB flash drive, so you can save your session and reuse the OS at a later time, along with ISO-hybrid support.

Also new in Exton|OS Light Build 160728 is the addition of the Nitrogen Wallpaper Manager software that lets users change the desktop background. A lot of wallpapers have been added to /usr/share/backgrounds.
