Also includes packages from Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch"

GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton recently released a new version of his ExTiX Linux distro, which he dubs as "the Ultimate Linux System," based on Ubuntu 17.10 and Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch."

Tagged as Build 171012, ExTiX 17.8 is the most recent update of the GNU/Linux distribution, which appears to be the first to be based on Canonical's upcoming Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) operating system, but also borrowing some packages from the repositories of Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" OS.

However, ExTiX 17.8 comes with the more lightweight LXQt 0.11.1 desktop environment instead of GNOME 3.26.1, which is pre-installed in Ubuntu 17.10, due for release on October 19, 2017. Also, the distro ships with developer's specially crafted 4.13.0-15-exton, which is based on Linux kernel 4.13.4.

On top of that, ExTiX 17.8 includes Refracta Tools, a set of graphical utilities that let users effortlessly build their own Ubuntu Live systems in minutes. You can use Refracta Tools to create a clone of ExTiX 17.8 or Ubuntu 17.10, with LXQt or any other desktop environment that's supported by Ubuntu/Debian.

"I have made a new version of ExTiX – The Ultimate Linux System. I call it ExTiX 17.8 LXQt Live DVD," said Arne Exton in the release announcement. "While running ExTiX LXQt 17.8 live or from the hard drive you can use Refracta tools (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu system. A ten-year child can do it!"

Mozilla Firefox replaces Google Chrome as default web browser

Another noteworthy change in the ExTiX 17.8 release is that the developer replaced Google Chrome with Mozilla Firefox as default web browser, as the latter is now capable of supporting playback of Netflix movies and TV shows. Other than that, the BlueGriffon 2.3.1 WYSIWYG editor and Nvidia 384.90 graphics driver are included.

All the packages included in ExTiX 17.8 have been updated to their latest versions as of October 12, 2017. You can study the complete list of pre-installed packages, and download the ExTiX 17.8 LXQt Live DVD ISO image right now from our website if you wish to install it on your personal computer.
