GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton announced today, April 18, 2017, the release and immediate availability for download of the ExTiX 17.4 LXQt Live DVD GNU/Linux distribution.

ExTiX 17.4 appears to be the second distro based on Canonical's latest Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) operating system, after Ultimate Edition 5.4. However, ExTiX 17.4, which is dubbed "The Ultimate Linux System," is also based on the repositories of Debian GNU/Linux 8.7 "Jessie" and Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch."

The biggest new feature of ExTiX 17.4 seems to be the latest LXQt 0.11.1 desktop environment, which replaces the Unity 7 user interface of Ubuntu 17.04. The distro is now powered by kernel 4.10.0-19-exton, which is based on Linux kernel 4.10.8, and all pre-installed packages have been updated to their latest versions.

"ExTiX 17.4 LXQt DVD 64 bit is based on Debian 8.7 Jessie/Debian 9 Stretch and Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty Zapus, released 170412. The original system includes the desktop environment Unity (Ubuntu). After removing Unity I have installed LXQt 0.11.1," said Arne Exton in the release announcement.

Google Chrome is default web browser

Among the apps shipping with the ExTiX 17.4 release, we can mention Google Chrome as default web browser, BlueGriffon 2.3.1 WYSIWYG content editor, LibreOffice office suite, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Gparted partition editor, Brasero CD/DVD burning tool, and SMPlayer multimedia player.

Out-of-the-box support for multimedia codecs is provided in ExTiX 17.4, along with GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) and other compilation tools that allow you to install any other programs from source. Also installed is the latest Nvidia 381.09 proprietary graphics driver for those with Nvidia GPUs.

ExTiX 17.4 LXQt Live DVD is available for download right now from our website. The ISO image supports only 64-bit computers, can be written on USB flash drives or DVD discs, and features a "Copy to RAM" boot options that lets you run the live system directly from your computer's memory, ejecting the bootable medium.
