After informing us about the availability of a new build of his Arch Linux-based ArchEX GNU/Linux distribution, Arne Exton is today announcing the general availability of ExTiX 17.2.

ExTiX 17.2 is based on the Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak), Debian GNU/Linux 8.7 "Jessie," and Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" operating systems. It is powered by a kernel from the Linux 4.10 series, namely Linux kernel 4.10.3, and it's built around the lightweight LXQt 0.10.0 desktop environment.

"I have made a new version of ExTiX – The Ultimate Linux System. I call it ExTiX 17.2 LXQt Live DVD," said Arne Exton in the release announcement. "ExTiX 17.2 LXQt DVD 64 bit is based on Debian 8.7 Jessie/Debian 9 Stretch and Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak. My special kernel 4.10.0-14-exton corresponding kernel.org’s stable kernel 4.10.3."

The Ultimate Linux System

ExTiX 17.2 is dubbed by the developer as "The Ultimate Linux System," because it includes many of the latest GNU/Linux technologies and open-source applications, but also because it borrows so much from some of the best and most popular Linux-based operating systems, Debian and Ubuntu.

ExTiX 17.2 Build 170320 is available for download right now on our website as a Live ISO image that will only work on modern 64-bit computers, despite the fact that is shipping with the LXQt desktop environment, which is mainly designed for older computers from 5 or 10 years ago.

The LXQt desktop also replaces the resource-hungry Unity user interface from the Ubuntu Linux operating system, and users will find installed popular apps like the Google Chrome web browser and Samba for connecting to Windows PCs on their home networks. The default system language for ExTiX 17.2 is English. Check out the gallery below to see ExTiX in action!
