ExTiX 15.3 64-bit, a distribution based on Ubuntu 15.04 that uses the LXQt desktop environment, has been officially released and is now ready for download and testing.

The ExTiX project moved to LXQt a while back, and it looks like they are sticking with it. The developer says that he basically stripped Ubuntu of Unity and installed LXQt instead. As you well know, there is no official LXQt flavor for Ubuntu, just the Lubuntu, which uses LXDE by default. Interestingly enough, Lubuntu will soon move to LXQt as well, so we're going to have a couple of versions that are similar.

In any case, ExTiX 15.3 is not all about adopting a new desktop environment. The developer has also integrated a large number of different packages, and that includes a new Linux kernel, which is much more advanced than the one found in Ubuntu or Debian 8.1 by default.

Because the operating system is based on LXQt, it also means that the hardware requirements are pretty low. This is a very light desktop environment, and users will quickly notice this, even if they only start the Live CD.

"ExTiX 15.3 LXQt DVD 64 bit is based on Debian 8.1 Jessie/Ubuntu 15.04. The original system includes the Desktop Environment Unity (Ubuntu). After removing Unity, I have installed LXQt 0.9.0. LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment," says the dev.

According to the changelog, the developer has also added Linux kernel 4.1.0-3-exton, which is a version found only in this OS, the BlueGriffon Web Editor has been implemented by default, the latest Nvidia drivers have been implemented, and a number of other fixes have been added as well.

Check the official website for more details about this release. You can download ExTiX 15.3 64-bit right now from Softpedia. Keep in mind that the developer doesn't make a 32-bit version of this distribution.
