GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton has informed Softpedia today, June 13, 2016, about the immediate availability of a new build of his ExLight Linux Live DVD distribution.

ExLight Linux Build 160612 is here, officially released on June 12 and based on the latest Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) and Debian GNU/Linux 8.5 "Jessie" operating systems.

The biggest new features implemented in the new ExLight Linux release are the rebase on Linux kernel 4.6.2 and the upcoming Enlightenment 0.21 desktop environment/window manager.

"I have upgraded the desktop environment Enlightenment (beauty at your fingertips) to version 0.20.99.0 (from 0.19.12)," says Arne Exton. "I have also replaced kernel 4.2.0-16-exton with kernel 4.6.2-exlight."

Another improvement brought by Arne Exton to his ExLight Linux distro is support for the ISO image to be deployed to either USB flash drives or DVD discs, which users can employ to install the operating system on their personal computers.

Of course, as with many other GNU/Linux distributions out there, you aren't forced to install anything on your PC, as you can use ExLight directly from the Live USB key and save your settings to reuse them at a later time, thanks to the persistence technology.

ExLight Linux is now even more lightweight than before

But wait, that's not all, as ExLight Linux Build 160612 comes with another major improvement, namely the ability to run the operating system from RAM using the new "Copy to RAM" boot options from the live medium.

What this means exactly is that the contents of the Live USB/DVD will be copied your computer's memory (RAM), so you can eject the bootable medium and use the OS without any attachments. However, you'll need to have at least 2GB of RAM.

Among the pre-installed applications in ExLight Linux, we can mention LibreOffice, Synaptic Package Manager, Gparted, Wicd, PCManFM, Google Chrome, and GIMP. There are also various tools to help you install programs from source.

Lastly, the distro comes with the Nvidia 361.45.11 video driver to support the newest Nvidia graphics cards. Download ExLight Linux Build 160612 right now via our website, and please study the full ExLight package list for more details.
