The space shooters are making a comeback, but the Linux platform doesn't seem to be of interest yet. The developers from ROCKFISH Games are now trying to release Everspace, a new single-player space shooter built on the Unreal Engine 4, and a Linux version is planned.

The guy (and gals) at ROCKFISH Games are now on Kickstarter with their game, and they are also on Steam Greenlight. They need funds to complete their work, but they shouldn't have too much trouble with the campaign since their game looks insanely good, and it comes with a roguelike concept that we don't get to see in this type of games.

At this point, you're wondering where Everspace will fit in the market, with titles like Elite or Star Citizen, and a few more on the pipeline. Unlike those games, this follows a completely different recipe. You're in space, and you need to reach your destination. The space between your current location and where you need to arrive is generated differently each time you start a game, or you die, including the enemies. It's not supposed to be an easy game, and you'll definitely be challenged.

Everspace can land on Linux as well

Developers said that the support for the Linux platform is the first stretch goal for their campaign, so if you want to play this game on Linux, you'll need to help and make a contribution.

Everspace gameplay

"In EVERSPACE we take a more action-focused approach to the core gameplay of a space shooter and combine it with a modern, rogue-like game loop taking you on a challenging journey through an ever-changing, yet beautifully crafted universe full of surprises. Each run will be exciting as you will have to face completely new situations. Your skills, experience and talent for improvisation will be tested continuously. By this we keep each part of the game long-lasting and generate lots of individual, meaningful moments for you to experience," reads the Kickstarter project.

It's difficult not to get excited about this game, especially since it's trying to do something that hasn't been done before. If the project is successfully funded, it should arrive in a year or so, in October 2016.
