Parrot Security OS, the security-oriented GNU/Linux distribution designed with IoT (Internet of Things) security, ethical hacking, and cloud-based penetration testing in mind, has been updated recently to version 3.8.

Coming two months after the 3.7 update, Parrot Security OS 3.8 introduces updated components and new features. But first, it's imperative to mention that this release is based on the Debian Testing repositories, the upcoming Debian GNU/Linux 10 "Buster" operating system, which means that it uses the Linux 4.12 kernel.

As for the goodies implemented in this release, we can mention ZFS support, MATE 1.18 as default desktop environment, better support for wireless cards, the latest GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) 7.2 compiler, along with GCC 6.4, OpenJDK 9 as default Java implementation, a lightweight Bitcoin client, and , and Electrum.

"We have not only fixed the previous DNS resolution issues, but also introduced a new round-robin model between both the default DNS servers provided by dhcp and our new OpenNIC DNS nodes hosted on our servers to prevent DNS censorship," explained the devs. "Our OpenNIC nodes were not yet added to the OpenNIC server list but we would love to add them in the future."

Ubuntu's AppArmor now enabled by default for better overall security

Among other noteworthy changes shipping with the Parrot Security OS 3.8 release, we can mention the enablement of Ubuntu's AppArmor Linux kernel security module by default for better overall security, and it also looks like Red Hat's Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) module is coming soon, too.

Apart from that, the update adds a bunch of improvements to the Lite edition of Parrot Security OS, such as the inclusion of the LibreOffice office suite and the removal of useless packages to make the system run faster and eat fewer resources. In addition, Parrot Security OS 3.8 brings support for more single-board computers.

You can download the Parrot Security OS 3.8 live and installation images right now through our website if you want to install this ethical hacking and pentesting distro on your PC. This release is available in multiple editions, including 64-bit PCs, ARM images for various SoC boards like Raspberry Pi, Orange Pi, and Pine64.
