The developers of the educational-oriented Escuelas Linux operating system are informing Softpedia today, May 3, 2017, on the availability of the Escuelas Linux 5.3 release.

Incorporating some of the latest GNU/Linux technologies and Open Source applications, Escuelas Linux 5.3 brings a month's worth of updates and security fixes. It's powered by the recently released Linux 4.10.12 kernel and ships with the Vivaldi 1.8, Google Chrome 58 (64-bit) and Google Chrome 57 (32-bit) web browsers.

Both the LibreOffice 5.3.2 and OnlyOffice Desktop Editor 4.3 office suites are now available in the distribution, the Rosa Media Player was replaced with SMPlayer as default video player, and the Mozilla Firefox web browser has been updated to version 53.0, along with the latest Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release) version.

"We are aware that in a lot of countries Java-based educational content has been created during a lot of years, so this change would render that content unusable. For this reason, we now also include another Firefox, the Extended Support Release (ESR), for our users that still need to use legacy Java-based apps," explain the devs.

LiveCode downgraded from version 8.1.2 to 7.1.4, bug fixes

Escuelas Linux 5.3 also includes an older version of the LiveCode programming app, which was downgraded from version 8.1.2 to 7.1.4, makes it possible to open wxMaxima files from the file manager, and fixes a bug to make the TuxRacer game run in the Spanish language when the Spanish edition of Escuelas Linux is used.

The 32-bit Live ISO image of Escuelas Linux now comes with the Kompozer open-source WYSIWYG HTML and CSS editor, and also makes the app to use its Spanish translation when used under the 64-bit Spanish edition of the OS. Other than that, it looks like the Install Manual received some minor corrections.

The Escuelas devs have managed to fix an issue that would make Mozilla Firefox display a warning about the user needing to reset the web browser when using the in-house built ForceUser and RestoreUser apps after a while. You can download the 64-bit and 32-bit Live ISOs of Escuelas Linux 5.3 right now from our website.
