14 DAY TRIAL // Enlightenment developer Mike Blumenkrantz has announced the availability of the first and probably the last RC (Release Candidate) build for the upcoming Enlightenment 0.21.0 desktop environment.
Enlightenment is a free, open-source and lightweight window manager and desktop environment for GNU/Linux operating systems, but it is currently not being used by default on any popular distribution. However, it can be easily installed from the main software repositories of many OSes.
Enlightenment 0.21.0 is the next major version of the open-source desktop environment, and it entered development a couple of months ago, ar the beginning of April, when the Enlightenment devs announced the release of the first Alpha build.
One month later, on mid-May, the Enlightenment team pushed the Beta version of the upcoming Enlightenment 0.21.0 desktop environment to public beta testers, allowing them to get an early taste of the new features. And now, Enlightenment 0.21.0 is up to RC state, bringing more bug fixes and improvements.
Better Wayland support, video backgrounds, and more
Among the changes implemented in the Enlightenment 0.21.0 Release Candidate (RC) build announced on June 2, 2016, we can mention DMA buffer support and the implementation of a session recovery functionality for the next-generation Wayland display server, a brand new DRM sub-system, and the usual bug/crash fixes.
With the Release Candidate out the door, we can only hope that the final Enlightenment 0.21.0 release is coming soon, very soon actually, bringing great improvements to the Wayland support, support for video backgrounds, a new gadget infrastructure, as well as multiple enhancements to the wizard.
