Patrick Emmabuntüs, creator and maintainer of the Debian-based Emmabuntüs Linux operating system informs Softpedia today about the release and immediate availability of the first Emmabuntüs Debian Edition release based on Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch."

Emmabuntus Debian Edition 2 1.01 is the first release of the GNU/Linux distribution designed from the offset to be used on the computers of various educational communities around the globe that don't have the resources to use proprietary software to be based on on the Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" operating system series. Most specifically, this release is based on the latest Debian GNU/Linux 9.3 release.

"This release is intended to alleviate even more the refurbishing workload on all the associations using Emmabuntüs, notably our friends of the Eisenia with their reuse in solidarity project Linux & Populus, our friends from Ayiyikoh, from BabyLab, and from the JMSI in Ivory Coast, with Jerryvalentin, their future big reuse event, as well as this nice initiative from our WenakLabs friends who are using Emmabuntüs in a Chad camp to introduce refugee children to the computer world," Patrick Emmabuntüs said in the announcement.

Here's what's new in Emmabuntus Debian Edition 2 1.01

Prominent new features of the Emmabuntus Debian Edition 2 1.01 release include the implementation of Audacious Equalizer presets and the big deactivation in the logout window, the addition of PulseEffects-Equalizer as a drop in replacement for Pulseaudio-Equalizer, implementation of the LibreOffice-gnome packet to allow users to open LibreOffice documents located on a Samba network, along with the rfkill packet for Wi-Fi activation.

NetworkManager now ships with Wi-Fi MAC address scan disabled by default, the non-free software installation scripts were improved to use the Internet if available, and there's now a new firmware-realtek packet to support most of the Broadcom wireless chips. The AbiWord word processor and Gnumeric spreadsheet editor are now pre-installed, along with TurboPrint 2.44, Skype 8.13, and HPLip 3.17.11.

Some network connection issues with the Thunar file manager and Samba were addressed as well in this release, which adds a workaround for a display freeze problem during startup with the Linux 4.9 kernel. Emmabuntus Debian Edition 2 1.01 also improves the login screen, LXDE's banner launch, Lilo utilization, Sysinfo closing, and firewall activation issues, and adds missing icons within LibreOffice.
