The developers of the popular and gorgeous elementary OS Linux distribution were proud to announce a few minutes ago the immediate availability for download of the first maintenance release to Freya.

elementary OS 0.3.1 Freya brings a more polished interface, addresses numerous issues reported by users since the elementary OS 0.3.0 release, adds many enhancements to translations, offers better hardware support, and introduces several new features that both existing and new elementary OS users will find useful and unique. But first, we should congratulate the elementary OS team for their 5 million downloads milestone!

"We’re very proud to share some elementary OS download stats as well! So far, elementary OS has been downloaded and estimated 5 million times. Of those downloads, we’re seeing that almost 70% are coming from Windows and OS X. So, ‘Welcome and congratulations!’ to the over 3 million new users of an open source operating system," reads the announcement.

Prominent features of elementary OS 0.3.1 Freya include Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS' Linux 3.19 kernel packages, updates to the Mesa 3D Graphics Library, fixing the dreaded “double cursor” glitch, support for Nvidia Optimus hardware when using the workspaces in the Multitasking view, important UEFI improvements, support for 5th-generation Intel CPUs, as well as improved support for touchpads and backlights in modern laptops.

Midori 0.5.11 is the default web browser

The recently announced Midori 0.5.11 web browser has been included in elementary OS 0.3.1 Freya by default, the Files file manager has received numerous needed improvements, the Language & Region pane from the System Settings app has been redesigned, support for custom shortcuts has been added to the Keyboard settings pane, Geary 0.10 is the default email client, and there are a host of cosmetic changes.

Lastly, the first point release of elementary OS 0.3 Freya includes several other small improvements, such as the addition of single-click selection helpers in the Photos app, similar to the ones available in the Files app, as well as a brand new “Window Dodge” hide mode for the Plank dock. While existing elementary OS 0.3 Freya users can upgrade to the 0.3.1 version right now, the rest of the world can download elementary OS 0.3.1 Freya from either Softpedia or the project's website.
