The distro will feature updated kernel/graphics stacks

elementary's Cassidy James Blaede shared some insight into the development of the upcoming major release of the elementary OS desktop operating system, Juno.

According to the elementary OS developer, the next release of the Ubuntu-based operating system is getting a new versioning scheme, updated kernel and graphics stacks, as well as the latest GTK+ technologies.

We already knew that "Juno" would be the codename of the next major elementary OS release, but it now looks like the version number was changed from 0.5 to 5.0, which, apparently, won't mean anything to regular users.

As previously announced, elementary OS 5.0 "Juno" will be based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver), which is due for release on April 26, 2018. Unfortunately, Juno has no release date set at the moment of writing, but it should arrive after the release of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

When asked by the community when elementary OS 5.0 "Juno" will be released, the developer answered "Not before April, 2018," which means that you shouldn't expect it anytime soon. "We’ve never released before the respective LTS, and we’ve also historically released several months after it," said Cassidy James Blaede.

Will be out when it's ready, there's no roadmap

The elementary OS developer also said that elementary OS 5.0 "Juno" has no roadmap and will be out when it’s ready. A beta version will be available for public testing when it’s almost ready, along with more information about the exact feature sets.

The beta will allow application developers to test their apps for the final release of Juno, and also prepare for the new stacks and features. Until then, elementary's devs promise to keep the current release of the operating system up-to-date.

Every new major elementary OS release brought a decent amount of new features and updated/new apps, so we believe the trend will continue this year for elementary OS 5.0 "Juno."
