elementary OS "Isis," the next iteration of the famous operating system that managed to capture everyone's attention in just a couple of years, now has a development version available for download.

The previous version of elementary OS was based on Ubuntu 12.04, but the developers have now adopted Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as their base, or at least this is what we can deduce from the name of the ISO and the fact that it is using the same Linux kernel.

The elementary OS version that you can download right now is still in development, so don't expect any miracles from it, although it seems to be pretty stable. Right off the bat you will notice some important changes beside the general look of the distro.

For example, the header bar for the windows has been unified and it now houses the path field and the buttons, the top bar with the indicators is now completely transparent (although it "knows" to change opacity based on the background), and the Slinghshot menu has been improved significantly.

It's interesting to note that the developers chose to make this image public, because they kept everything in-house before the previous launch.

UPDATE: The developers have kindly explained that this development build is used for internal testing and that it's not meant to be employed by users. We have removed the download links.

Many users will jump at the occasion to install and test the new elementary OS "Isis" even if it's just a development release. You can download the stable version of Elementary right now from Softpedia.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
