Photo of hilarious airport sign goes viral

Carpets have plenty of fibers and fibers work wonders for the digestive tract, so at least from this standpoint, it makes sense to snack on one or two every once in a while.

All the same, the Chennai International Airport in India doesn't seem to care very much about the wellbeing of the travelers who visit it, hence its putting up a sign explicitly prohibiting people from feasting on carpets laid down on the floor.

How one airport sign became a viral hit

“Eating carpet strictly prohibited,” the sign on display at India's Chennai International Airport reads. It was spotted by a businessman by the name of Justin Ross Lee a few days ago, who made sure to upload a snapshot of it on social media.

As it almost always happens with all things funny, Justin Ross Lee's photo of the “Eating carpet strictly prohibited” warning didn't take long to go viral, and understandably so. After all, it's not often that airports take it to themselves to give people advice about what they should and should not eat.

“What an outrage,” the businessman commented on the sign in a Facebook post. Well, the truth is that, at the end of the day, pretty much anybody who doesn't enjoy being bossed around is bound to take offense at this airport sign.

A perfectly reasonable message lost in translation

Joking aside, carpets do not proper snacks make. Everybody knows this, so then why was it that India's Chennai International Airport felt the need to warn people not to feast on floor covering?

Well, according to a Facebook user by the name of Muzammil Azmi, the sign was actually supposed to read “Sitting and eating on the carpet is prohibited.” That makes more sense, doesn't it?

So, yes, this hilarious airport sign comes down to a perfectly reasonable message that somehow got lost in translation. Let's just hope the staff at the Chennai International Airport will double-check any future recommendations to travelers.

What an outrage India. All I want to do is go down on your curry-stained airport carpet... A photo posted by #JewJetting (@justinrosslee) on Aug 23, 2015 at 10:12am PDT
