Star Wars Battlefront II is almost out (November 17), but the people that have been playing the pre-release trial period discovered that it would take a very long time to unlock some of the main characters or they will have to spend some real money.

Unlike the previous iteration in the series, the heroes and villains in this new Star Wars adventure are more challenging to unlock. Users have estimated that it will take more than 40 hours of grinding to get to someone like Darth Vader.

If you play every day and you get the credits from each match, which is around 200-300, getting to a character that costs 60,000 like Darth Vader is not going to be easy. It’s understandable why the community would be upset about this problem, and why there are drawing comparisons with the first game in the series.

Don’t ask for money for things that should be available from day one

The biggest complaint about the credit system is that main characters from the movies are the main reason why people are playing. Sure, it’s fun to play as a Stormtrooper, but everyone wants to get to Darth Vader. It’s assumed that you will be able to do so when you buy the game but to find out that it takes about 40 hours will leave a lot of people bitter.

Electronic Arts responded to some of the critics on Reddit, which turned out to be a big mistake. Leaving aside that Electronic Arts and Ubisoft are not the most beloved companies on Reddit, the answer that the company provided made everyone even angrier.

“The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes. As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we're looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we'll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay.”

“We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets. Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can.”

As it stands right now, the comment has gathered more than 50,000 downvotes, and that has to be some kind of the record. In fact, it’s now the most downvoted comment on Reddit. If the point of their comment was to make sure that everyone is ever more opposed to the Electronic Arts, then their mission was successful.

Most people just want to play with the heroes

It turns out that not everyone is willing to go through so many hours of gameplay just to unlock a character that’s technically available from the start. It wouldn’t even be such a big problem, to begin with, if the argument presented by EA wasn’t flawed.

They say that the reason why it takes so much to get to that character is that players will feel “a sense of pride and accomplishment.” Imagine that you have to play 40 hours for just ONE character, what about the others?

But Electronic Arts also allows players to buy in-game credits. So, after a player pays $60 for a game that already has the character “unlocked,” he will have to pay yet again not to wait forever to get to that character.

It’s not clear whether Electronic Arts will do anything about it, but if the game the game will register the expected success, then they will probably do nothing.
