eMachines Pushes Two New AMD-Based Desktop PCs

- The new offerings are aimed at low-budget and entry-level users

By: Bogdan Botezatu, Hardware Editor

Low-Budget system vendor eMachines has just announced the addition of two new desktop systems to its entry-level PC portfolio. The new offerings are especially tailored for students
and home computer users.

Based on AMD's dual-core Sempron and Athlon processors, the systems deliver average performance for both work-related application or multimedia playback, but at the same time sell for an insignificant price. eMachnes systems have never excelled as top-notch offerings, but rather as ultra-cheap offerings that let the user perform general computing tasks.

"Our new eMachines desktop PCs are powerful systems that won't break the bank," said Gateway's senior manager of desktops Glenn Jystad, in a statement. "These systems include the right blend of technologies and features that make them affordable without sacrificing performance," Jystad continued.

The newly-released eMachines T3646 comes equipped with an archaic 2.2 GHz AMD Sempron LE-1250 processor, as well as with Nvidia GeForce 6100 graphics, 1 GB of RAM, a 160 GB 7200 rpm SATA II hard drive, 5.1 surround sound audio, a 16× DVD±RW DVD burner, and 15-in-1 media card reader, onboard modem and Ethernet, an available PCIe ×8 slot, and six USB ports.

The hardware configuration for the T3646 is extremely modest, but the fully-fledged desktop (except for the monitor) comes at a lower price tag than the tiny Eee PC from Asustek, namely $299.99.

The second offering from the budget PC vendor is the eMachines T5254 model, that comes with similar specifications, except for the fact that is powered by a dual core AMD Athlon BE-2350 running at 2.1 GHz. Other technical specifications include 2 GB of RAM, and 320 GB of storage space on a conventional hard-disk drive. The system sells for $399 and is available immediately at eMachines' retail partners.

The T3646 and T5254 desktop PCs come with a pre-installed version of Windows Vista Home Basic and Vista Home Premium, respectively.

eMachines Pushes Two New AMD-Based Desktop PCs - USER OPINIONS

The T3646 isn't a bad machine, especially to run WinXP on. But of course finding out the info on what hardware is in the case is pretty much a wild goose chase. In case you're doing what I'm doing with one... the motherboard is the MCP61SM2MA AM2 uATX. You can find the drivers at:
