eDonkey Shuts Down

After WinMX closed its ports last week, it was eDonkey's turn to do the same. Rumors on this decision appeared once WinMX shutdown, but eDonkey hadn't confirmed anything official.

Sam Yagan, the president of MetaMachine, the company behind eDonkey, said during the U.S. Senate Judiciary Hearing that the P2P network
is closing down.

Sam Yagan's decision was influenced by the sentence in the Grokster versus MGM lawsuit; MetaMachine's president outlined that it means the end of all the P2P networks, because they will not afford the expenses implied by a lawsuit in which to prove that the copyrights were not infringed or that such behavior was not encouraged.

eDonkey was one of the seven companies receiving warnings from RIAA and Yagan said that not only the company was facing trial, but also its executive and general mangers. Yagan has decided to comply and, so, eDonkey is no more.

Still, Yagan warned that the winners of the MGM versus Grokster lawsuit will the P2P networks operating outside the US, because nothing stops them from continuing their activity.
