Calibre 1.32, an eBook reader and management software developed for multiple platforms, including Linux, has just been released and it incorporates a number of important changes and improvements.

The Calibre developers are running out of things to fix and of features to add. This week's update is a little smaller than what we've gotten used to, but it does feature a very important change for Fetch News, a very underrated option in Calibre.

People know about Calibre mostly because it's a software used for eBook conversion, but it also features a number of other functions, like the option to fetch news from various sources and present them as eBooks.

According to the changelog, it's now possible to create custom news sources by importing OPML files, which is a widely used format in the industry. A number of RSS news reader programs are able to export their list of RSS feeds in the OPML format, like Mozilla Thunderbird, for example.

A few other major features have also received improvements. For example, when users insert metadata as a jacket page, the application will also alter the font sizes in the jacket so that the sizes match those used in the rest of the book. Users can also print now the generated jacket HTML.

It's now possible to search for books by their id and uuid by using the using the id: and uuid: prefixes, and users can specify a number of arbitrary colors for the column coloring rules.

Also, the version of OpenSSL shipped in the binary builds (the version in the windows 64-bit build was vulnerable to the Heartbleed bug) has been updated, the books are no longer being marked as modified even when no actual changes have been done by various automated tools, the ebook-device cp -f is no longer failing when the destination file already exists, the window size for the cover download window is now being remembered, and it's not possible to import DOCX files that contain pages with zero effective width.

If you’ve decided to compile your own version of Calibre, be warned. It has a lot of dependencies and can be quite tricky. Fortunately, the developer also provides a complete list of dependencies, if you feel brave enough.
