Version 1.0 of the eBook reader and management software Calibre has been announced on August 23, after a long and arduous development time.

The developer has decided to skip all the intermediary versions and go straight for the 1.0 version. The previous release 0.9.44 didn't signal anything special, but 1.0 is here nonetheless.

Even if the size of the changelog is not impressive, the changes implemented in Calibre 1.0 are very important.

“calibre has reached 1.0, seven years after it was first released and a year since the last major release. Lots of new features have been added to calibre in the last year — a grid view of book covers, a new, faster database backend, the ability to convert Microsoft Word files, tools to make changes to ebooks without needing to do a full conversion, full support for font embedding and subsetting, and many more,” reads the official announcement.

First of all, the database backend has been re-written from scratch and, according to the developer, it's faster and smaller. The application should start a lot faster, but its speed is determined by the number of books and columns in the library.

Also, a new 'cover grid' view of the books in the Calibre library has been added. Users can now view their books by using the covers and not just the name. This option can be configured via Preferences > Look & Feel > Cover Grid.

A complete changelog can be found in the announcement. You can also check out our review of Calibre.

Keep in mind that if you want to compile the software yourself, you will need GLIBC 2.10 or higher, and xdg-utils and python ≥ 2.6 installed (3.x will not work). More details about the required dependencies can be found on the official website.
