eBay could have serious legal problems for not succeeding to block the auctions of contact lenses, BBC informs.

General Optical Council considers that the contact lenses have to be sold only by authorized ophthalmologists. The persons who acquire such lenses via the Internet risk damaging their eyesight, and even lose it.

The cosmetic contact lenses, which are not used to correct any deficiency, have to follow the same rules.

General Optical Council notified eBay UK of this problem, but the company didn't take any measures, and now a new lawsuit has started. In response, eBay said that it has blocked any auction involving contact lenses every time the company was notified.

eBay also said it's against the company's policy for users to sell drugs or other products which require a prescription.

Even so, General Optical Council said that two days ago, searching for "contact lenses" keywords, the site returned 200 results.

If eBay is to be found guilty of these charges, the company is liable for fine of 2500 pounds for every auction which involved such objects.
