The iPhone X got a photo score of 101 points

With minor improvements over the iPhone 8 in terms of camera, it makes sense for the iPhone X to provide similar performance to its more subtly-refined 2017 sibling, and this leads to a DxO score that could disappoint some hardcore fanboys.

The iPhone X got a photo score of 101 points, which makes it the best camera phone for stills, but reached only 89 points for videos, thus getting overall results that are nearly identical to the one of the iPhone 8 Plus in the in-depth DxOMark Mobile tests.

But this time, the iPhone X score also confirms something that could be a little more painful for Apple fans to admit: the Google Pixel 2 has the best camera in town.

DxO says the iPhone X overall score is 97 points, which puts the Apple device on par with the Huawei Mate 10, while Google Pixel 2 remains the king with 98 points.

Photo and video performance

As compared to the iPhone 8 Plus, the iPhone X improves in terms of zoom performance, DxO says, and this makes sense given the device features an improved telephoto lens with a wider-aperture f/2.4 lens with OIS.

Exposure, color, texture, noise, and artifacts have all been improved as well, and the iPhone X photo performance also includes good results when it comes to exposure and HDR images, accurate color rendering, detail quality and noise, and decent performance in Portrait mode.

“For video, the X doesn’t quite rise to the same high-water mark, achieving a video sub-score of 89 points. With its key strengths good exposure with fast convergence during lighting changes, accurate color rendering as well as fast and accurate autofocus and effective video stabilization, the X’s scores are almost identical to the iPhone 8 Plus’s,” DxO explains.

DxO explains that autofocus is occasionally a little slow on the iPhone X, and in flash-only photos, the device often takes underexposed pictures with red eye effects. For video, it discovered noise very visible in low light, high-frequency oscillations during walking movements, and slight loss of sharpness during tracking in low light.
