Ever since Mass Effect 3 was launched, fans of the franchise have been trying to get more information about the future of the series and the way BioWare plans to inject new ideas and new mechanics into one of the most loved gaming universes of the moment.

An announcement on the official blog of Drew Karpyshyn, the writer of the original title, reveals that he is back working for the studio and suggests that he might be involved with it in the future, although it seems that initially his focus will be on Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The author explains that he left the company in order to work on the Chaos Born novels and he is returning now that the trilogy is done.

Drew Karpyshyn has worked on major titles like the first two Mass Effect games, Knights of the Old Republic and the MMO linked to the same universe.

He states, "The thing I missed most about BioWare was the amazing people I got to work with, and luckily for me many of them are still there! I suspect a lot of folks are going to wonder if this means BioWare is about to announce a new project tied to my return. The short answer: no."

He might be working on Star Wars for the moment, but he is also working on another book, which will probably be linked to one of the major intellectual properties that the studio owns.

The Old Republic is now offered under a free-to-play system

The MMO was first a subscription-based model but BioWare and Electronic Arts decided that it can reach a wider audience as a title that delivers a lot of content even for those who are unwilling to pay for it monthly.

A Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion will be launched towards the end of October and is designed to focus on storytelling, introducing new companions and areas to explore and giving Knights of the Old Republic some new adventures to embark on.

The new Mass Effect is in development at BioWare but it has no clear launch window and the developers are saying that they will offer more details on its mechanics and story in 2016.

Commander Shepard and his crew will no longer be at the center of the experience, which will focus more on the exploration of the new Andromeda galaxy and the weird aliens that gamers will meet and interact with.
