This month’s Patch Tuesday brought new update rollups for Windows 7 and 8.1, as well as new security-only updates for systems that are yet to upgrade to Windows 10.

In essence a sibling of the more famous Windows 10 cumulative updates, monthly rollups are supposed to help bring a Windows 7 or 8.1 computer fully up-to-date easier, as they include both security improvements and non-security patches that the company releases every month.

Windows 7 SP1 is getting KB4025341 (download link), which includes an eagerly-awaited fix for Internet Explorer 11 crashes experienced when visiting certain websites. This is a bug that was believed to be introduced by update KB4022168, so it’s good that Microsoft has finally addressed the problem.

Additionally, this monthly rollup for Windows 7 includes security updates for a number of Windows features and components, including the Graphics Component, Windows Search, the Windows kernel, Windows shell, Microsoft NTFS, and the Windows Store and File Systems.

Windows 8.1 monthly rollup

The Windows 8.1 monthly rollup is KB4025336 (download link) and this time more improvements are included, some of which have been part of KB4022720 released in late June.

Specifically, this update fixes the same Internet Explorer 11 bug that was repaired on Windows 7, but this time Microsoft says that it was caused by KB4022720. There’s also a second bug fix for an issue causing .jpx and .jbig2 images to stop rendering in PDF files, as well as security updates for a long list of Microsoft tools and Windows components, including Windows Search and the Windows kernel.

Microsoft is also offering security-only updates for both Windows 7 and 8.1 updates as KB4025337 and KB4025333, respectively, but this time only the aforementioned security changes are included.

As it happens with so important releases, reboots are required, which means that work on workstations and servers where the updating process is started needs to be saved to complete the install.
