Video game developer id Software and publisher Bethesda Softworks are announcing that they are planning to launch Doom on a worldwide level on the Xbox One from Microsoft, the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the PC on May 13 of this year.

The coming title, which has been long in development, will introduce a single-player campaign that uses the classic premise of the series to get the player fighting demons once again using a wide array of weapons in a complex series of locations.

The new trailer offers some details about the way gamers will be able to interact with Hell.

Doom also has multiplayer that will offer some modes and gamers will also get access to a SnapMap game editor that will allow them to put together, share and then play user-created content.

id Software and Bethesda are also revealing a new Collector's Edition of the shooter that can be pre-ordered and will set for 119.99 dollars or 129.99 Euro, featuring a Revenant statue that has a metal base and is illuminated by an LED.

Gamers who place a pre-order for Doom will also get access to a Demon multiplayer pack that offers a demon armor with three skin versions, six metallic paint colors, and three id logo patterns as well as a set of six hack modules, which are consumables that can offer players an edge during combat.

The first-person shooter is powered by a new id Engine 6 that is designed to deliver impressive graphics quality that uses the power of new PC hardware as well as the resources of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, running on both at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second.

Bethesda has not offered an in-depth look at the mechanics of the game yet, and the May 13 launch date will probably surprise some gamers who were expecting the title to arrive during the fall.

Doom aims to offer a classic experience

The series has always offered mechanics that emphasize speed, powerful weaponry and complex levels that allow for extended firefights.

It seems that the team at id Software wants to make momentum and solid gun play an important part of the action, with the studio confirming that the BFG 9000 and the super shotgun will be part of a gamer's arsenal.

The list of enemies will also include versions of the Revenant, Mancubus, and Cyberdemon and there are no plans to feature modern shooter tendencies like a cover system or health regeneration.

Doom will also feature melee takedowns, and the story will not be a major part of the single-player experience, according to id Software.

In the long term, the studio clearly wants to keep gamers engaged with the multiplayer modes, which will include deathmatch, domination, clan arena, and other classics.

It's unclear whether the company has plans to deliver downloadable content to keep offering new maps or even weapons to the fans or if they will rely on the SnapMap feature in order to ensure the longevity of the title.
