NBC Universal is probably next, as promised

Saying offensive stuff and being called out on it isn’t something new for Donald Trump, he’s made a career out of it. Considered either a fearless truth-teller or one of America’s biggest buffoons, Trump is getting ready to move up the ladder, by taking part in the Presidential elections of 2016.

He believes he can “make America great again,” and as the saying goes, all good deeds start at home: he’s keeping his promise of suing in the Miss USA and Miss Universe debacle that already cost him a fortune.

Trump goes after Univision

In one of his appearances following his Presidential announcement, Trump said that his plan for when he was elected into office was to “make” Mexico build a wall at the border to keep Mexicans out of the US. They were bad news, since they were rapists, drug dealers and thieves.

The response was swift: Univision, which had a deal with Trump to air Miss USA and Miss Universe in the country, pulled out of the contract. Obviously, they found Trump’s comments offensive and they didn’t want to continue putting money in his pockets.

Trump said he would sue and that’s exactly what he’s doing right now, NPR reports. He wants $500 million (€451.7 million) in damages from Univision for breach of contract. His argument is that Univision’s decision was politically motivated and, as such, in violation of his First Amendment right to free speech.

In other words, by terminating the contract before it expired, Univision asked Trump to censor himself when speaking in public, which he has the right to do.

Univision spokesperson Monica Talan finds the case ludicrous. “We will not only vigorously defend the case, but will continue to fight against Mr. Trump’s ongoing efforts to run away from the derogatory comments he made on June 16th about Mexican immigrants. Our decision to end our business relationship with Mr. Trump was influenced solely by our responsibility to speak up for the community we serve,”  Talan says in a statement.

NBC is probably next

The other day, Trump lost another major business partner when NBC Universal decided to do the same as Univision, for the same reason: in a statement, they announced they would not be broadcasting the popular beauty pageants anymore, and that Trump would not return to The Apprentice as host. He wouldn’t be on it at all.

Trump’s first reaction was to say “hell, I will be too busy to do The Apprentice either way, so I don’t mind,” but that was before he realized that NBC was also dumping him and his beauty pageants.

He called network bosses weaklings and cowards for publicly punishing him for saying what everyone else thought too. He also threatened to sue for breach of contract and, if his move on Univision is any indication, he’s going for NBC next.
