Rockstar Games confirms that its current focus is on creating new content for the Grand Theft Auto 5 GTA Online multiplayer mode, given that it's become extremely popular across all platforms. The studio is no longer working actively on things like the promised single-player story expansions.

Grand Theft Auto 5 launched back in 2013 for the PS3 and Xbox 360, then in 2014 for PS4 and Xbox One, and finally reached the PC in April of this year. Throughout the years, tens of millions of fans have flocked to the open-world experience, first to try out the single-player story and then to enjoy the GTA Online multiplayer mode.

GTA Online is extremely popular, so more content is coming

Developer Rockstar Games is surprised by the ongoing popularity of GTA Online, confirming to IGN that more than 8 million players log into the mode every week across PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

As such, the studio has allocated all the resources of its Rockstar North division to GTA Online so that the same amount of quality seen throughout the game can be offered through the DLC for the multiplayer mode.

This also means, unfortunately, that Rockstar doesn't seem to be working on any of the promised single-player DLC for GTA 5. When asked about this, the studio's Director of Design Imran Sarwar just emphasizes the sheer scope of GTA Online and doesn't mention the possibility of eventually seeing new story content.

"Right now our focus is on GTA Online which has exceeded our expectations. We currently have all key members of the team that launched Grand Theft Auto V focused on supporting GTA Online in every capacity. The community we’ve been able to foster is massive, growing each day and we have so many ideas that have yet to make it into the game. The evolution of GTA Online on these newer platforms is also an exciting prospect as the power of those systems is going to allow us to achieve even more," he says.

While this isn't a formal denial, it's unlikely that GTA 5 will even get fresh single-player content, given the huge popularity of its multiplayer mode. The next major update for GTA Online, called Freemode Events, is set to debut next week and adds even more intense experiences to the mode, for free.
