Victor Vieux from the open source Docker app container engine released new development versions of the upcoming Docker 1.13.0 major milestone and Docker 1.12.4 maintenance update for the current stable series.

The third Release Candidate (RC) version of Docker 1.13.0 arrived a couple of days ago with numerous minor tweaks and fixes to polish the software before it's tagged as ready for production and hits the streets, which should happen in the coming weeks. Docker 1.13.0 RC3 comes two weeks after the release of the second RC build.

We've already discussed here many of the upcoming features of Docker 1.13.0, such as the ability to specify images used as a cache source on build, as well as support for building Docker DEBs for the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) and Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) operating systems on PPC64le and s390x hardware architectures.

Besides many Swarm Mode and networking improvements, Docker 1.13.0 also comes with support for compressing build context while building an image, includes an RPM builder for VMWare's Linux-based Photon OS, shell completions for tgz, a DEB builder for Ubuntu 16.10, and an RPM builder for Fedora 25 Linux.

First development release of Docker 1.12.4 now ready for public testing

While Docker 1.13.0 continues to take shape and get ready for its major launch, it looks like the Docker engineers are preparing a new maintenance release for the Docker 1.12 stable series. Docker 1.12.4 is now in development and a first Release Candidate (RC) build arrived earlier this morning for public testing.

Looking at the release notes for Docker 1.12.4 RC1, we can notice that it attempts to fix various runtime issues, includes an updated Swarmkit for the Swarm Mode, as well as an updated libnetwork library with numerous fixes to improve the networking functionality. The syslog log driver has been updated as well.

Also new in the Docker 1.12.4 maintenance release is support for running the "dnf upgrade" command before installing Docker in the Fedora Linux operating system, an up-to-date SELinux policy for GNU/Linux distributions based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3, and the re-implementation of build-date to RPM packages.

As expected, below we've attached the full changelog for the Docker 1.13.0 RC3 and Docker 1.12.4 RC1 development releases if you're curious to know what exactly has been changed since the last Release Candidate versions. Meanwhile, you can download the source archives right now from our website if you want to take them for a test drive.
