Docker's Victor Vieux announced the other day the release and immediate availability for download of the first RC (Release Candidate) snapshot of the upcoming Docker 1.12.2 open-source application container engine.

Docker 1.12.1, the first point release of Docker 1.12, which is a major branch that introduced built-in orchestration and routing mesh, a brand new Swarm Mode, as well as numerous networking security improvements, was announced last month on the 18th, and since then the development team never stopped improving the software.

Therefore, the second point release, Docker 1.12.2, is now officially in development, and a first Release Candidate version has been released into the wild for public testers and early adopters. It includes support for Apple's new macOS 10.12 Sierra operating system and improvements and bug fixes to the Swarm Mode, networking, and runtime.

The biggest changes implemented in this first Release Candidate build of Docker 1.12.2 are the latest libnetwork library, the implementation of a retry logic to prevent "Unable to remove filesystem" errors with the AUFS driver, a fix that patches devicemapper to no longer remove device symlinks, and up-to-date SwarmKit and Debian sysv-init script.

Docker 1.12.2 RC1 now available for download and testing

Docker 1.12.2 RC1 is now available for download. As usual, don't forget that it comes with an updated system unit file for RPM-based GNU/Linux distributions, which might cause the docker service to fail when upgrading from older versions. A workaround is provided by the developers in the release notes.

"Docker 1.12 ships with an updated systemd unit file for rpm-based installs (which includes RHEL, Fedora, CentOS, and Oracle Linux 7). When upgrading from an older version of Docker, the upgrade process may not automatically install the updated version of the unit file, or fail to start the docker service," reads the announcement.
