A versatile machine compatible with Raspberry Pi and Odroid

A new open source project hit Kickstarter a few days ago, and it caught our attention because it appears to be a versatile machine that's fully compatible with Raspberry Pi and Odroid single-board computers.

Created by Guillaume Debray, an optician with 10+ years experience in making and selling glasses, yet a passionate computer engineer with deep knowledge of programming and hardware assembly and manufacturing processes, the Diskio Pi project wants to be the ultimate open source tablet powered by Raspberry Pi.

Diskio Pi is the result of 18 months of development, and, in fact, it seems to be some sort of versatile device built on top of a single-board computer. It's currently compatible with Raspberry Pi 2, Raspberry Pi 3, Raspberry Pi Zero, Odroid C1, and Odroid C2 SBCs, and can run Ubuntu, Debian, Raspbian Pixel, or Android.

Perfect for building your own personalized tablet

Built on 100% open source hardware, Diskio Pi is a very modular device that's perfect for people who want to build their own personalized tablet. Its design lets users swap the core PC board depending on their needs, and it looks like support for more SBCs is planned for the near future.

You don't even have to open the device to install another PC board and make your tablet faster or have it deployed on a totally different project, but it's also possible to open the case and hack on it as you see fit by adding your own module via GPIO or USB ports.

By default, Diskio Pi comes with a capacitive IPS touch screen that offers a full HD (1920x1080) resolution and a motherboard. It also supports battery packs and the official Raspberry Pi Camera Module, but they are optional. The price for this kit will cost you $350 (the single-board computer and batteries are not included).

If you're interested in this open source project and need a modular tablet device for your projects, don't hesitate to visit Diskio Pi's Kickstarter page and pledge for the kit that suits your needs. Price can go up to $430 USD for the Home Pack, and the estimated delivery is currently set for February 2018, shipping worldwide.
