The digiKam 5.8.0 open-source cross-platform image editor, viewer, and organizer tool has been released over the weekend with numerous improvements and some new features.

Coming four months after the previous release, digiKam 5.8.0 is here with another set of enhancements for fans of the applications. For starters, the new version introduces a new tool that allows users to export their image collections to UPnP/DLNA-compatible devices. It can be accessed in all of digiKam's views through the Tools menu.

"In September 2017, the digiKam team has been invited to take part in the Randa Meetings," reads the release announcement. "We have focused the reunion on including the new media server dedicated to sharing collection contents on local networks with compatible DLNA devices or applications, such as tablets, cellulars, TV, etc."

The new UPnP/DLNA export tool can also be viewed in Showfoto, and since both the UPnP and DLNA protocols are standardized, there's no need for the digiKam team to create dedicated apps for each client device that wants access to your digiKam or Showfoto collections. Users can find many DLNA apps in the Android and iOS digital stores.

Dropbox export tools now ported to OAuth2, AppImage bundle improved

Apart from the new UPnP/DLNA export tool, digiKam 5.8.0 adds various improvements to the MySQL and MariaDB database support, ports the Dropbox export tools to the OAuth2 authorization API, and addresses more than 200 bugs that have been reported by users since the digiKam 5.7.0 release announced last year in September, thus improving the overall performance of the application.

digiKam 5.8.0 also improves the AppImage bundle for Linux-based operating systems by updating it to the latest SDK (Software Development Kit) to allow users to run it under Firejail sandboxing environments for better security, and updates the Windows installer to the latest NSIS version, thus adding compatibility with Windows 10 operating systems.

The macOS package build was improved as well in this release with the latest Packages build system, adding an extra layer of optional features to both digiKam and Showfoto. Lastly, there are some new low-level libraries ported to pure Qt5, including the digital scanner support and events file support with export to Calendar tool. You can download digiKam 5.8.0 for GNU//Linux, macOS, and Windows right now through our web portal.
