digiKam 5.7.0 was released today as the latest maintenance update to the open-source and cross-platform image editor, viewer and organizer software that introduces a couple of new features and many improvements.

Two and a half months in development, digiKam 5.7.0 is here to introduce two new tools, namely "Send by Mail" and "Print Creator." The first one will allow users to send photos by email directly from the app, supporting popular email clients like Mozilla Thunderbird, Evolution, KMail, Claws Mail, Sylpheed, Balsa, and Netscape.

In the "Send by Mail" dialog, users will be able set an upper limit to the email size, remove metadata from images before sending them as well as to convert images on the fly to other supported formats. On the other hand, the "Print Creator" tool is designed to let you create print layouts.

"If the aspect ratio does not fit the printing format, you can choose which part of the image to crop (if at all). The result can be sent directly to a printer, to GIMP or to a file," reads the release announcement. "The tool is available in all modes: Main view, light table, editor and showFoto through the tools menu."

digiKam 5.8.0 expected to launch in November

Among other noteworthy features introduced by today's digiKam update, we can mention support for the Hugin 2017 panorama photo stitcher app, as well as support for storing GPS traces in the KML format. As expected, an enormous list of issues reported by users since digiKam 5.6.0 were resolved in version 5.7.0.

digiKam 5.7.0 is available for download on GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now from our website, and it's a recommended update for all users. The next maintenance update, digiKam 5.8.0, will be released sometime in November and should introduce more goodies to the popular image editor app.
