14 DAY TRIAL // US officials are investigating a second cyber-security breach at the Democratic Party, this time with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).
This is the second hack that's under investigation at the Democratic Party, after a June report from security firm CrowdStrike revealed two cyber-attacks against the Democratic National Committee (DNC), one from April 2016 and the second from the summer of 2015.
After news of the attack had become public, a hacker going by the name of Guccifer 2.0 tried to take responsibility for the hacks, but the media was quick to brand him as a clueless frontman for two of Russia's government agencies suspected of the two hacks.
In fact, as more of the cyber-security sector and the media's efforts concentrated on the original DNC hack, its ties to Russia became apparent.
DCCC confirms hack and links to DNC incidents
Things escalated this Wednesday, when Republican Party presidential nominee Donald Trump hinted that Russia should hack the Democratic Party again or give back a collection of emails lost during the Clinton email server FBI probe.
A day later, Reuters was announcing that the FBI was called in to investigate another breach at the DCCC.
A day after the Reuters report, Meredith Kelly, National Press Secretary of the DCCC, publicly confirmed the rumors with a statement for the press, which you can read below.
“ The DCCC can confirm that we have been the target of a cybersecurity incident. Upon discovering the issue, we immediately took action and engaged with CrowdStrike, a leading forensic investigator, to assist us in addressing this incident. The investigation is ongoing. Based on the information we have to date, we've been advised by investigators that this is similar to the other recent incidents, including the DNC breach. The DCCC takes this matter very seriously. With the assistance of leading experts we have taken and are continuing to take steps to enhance the security of our network in the face of these recent events. We are cooperating with the federal law enforcement with respect to their ongoing investigation. ”
