Demi Lovato has a new album coming out this year, and the first single off it, released online some hours ago, is already a bit controversial. People on Twitter are saying that “Cool for the Summer” is a ripoff of previous songs by Katy Perry and Jessie J.

You can listen to the new track below. Much like Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl,” it talks about experimenting with a female friend, to satisfy a curiosity. It’s playful and light, and aims to be all about the fun.

However, if you ask Demi, that’s where the similarities end with these 2: responding to a tweet from Entertainment Tonight, she says that 2 female artists can sing about kissing girls without it being a case of stealing, so they shouldn’t be making too much of a fuss around it.

She doesn’t say anything about the alleged similarities with the melody, or about the comparisons to Jessie J’s “Domino,” which she is also accused of ripping off.

In a new interview with Ryan Seacrest for his radio show, Demi said she was done “with the serious stuff” so her new album would be fun and playful. “Cool for the Summer” is just that.
