Canonical and Dell announced informed Softpedia today about the availability of the Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition notebook with the latest Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) operating system pre-installed.

The Dell XPS 13 is a powerful and premium laptop featuring 8th generation Intel Quad Core processors, up to 16GB RAM, and up to 1TB SSD storage. It also features the world's first InfinityEdge 13.3-inch near bezel-less display with either Full HD or Ultra HD and touchscreen on the UHD option, as well as a sleek magnesium body with a silver finish. And now, you can purchase it in the United States with Canonical's latest and long-term supported Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) operating system.

"We are delighted to have worked in close partnership with Dell for the launch of their latest XPS 13 Developer Edition pre-installed with our newest LTS release. Dell’s superior hardware combined with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS provides an excellent, reliable experience straight out of the box. Building on our longstanding relationship with Dell over the last six years, we look forward to seeing 18.04 LTS roll out on further models in the coming months," comments Will Cooke, Desktop Engineering Director, Canonical.

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS is now certified for Dell XPS 13

Canonical and Dell said that they'd certified the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) operating system for Dell XPS 13 machines to provide the Open Source community of developers with a powerful and unrivaled machine that works out-of-the-box. They worked together in the past several months to ensure a seamless Ubuntu experience for all new Dell XPS 13 users from the first moment they unbox the notebook. Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will be supported by Canonical for five years, until April 2023.

The advantages of buying a Dell XPS 13 laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed is that Ubuntu 18.04 LTS comes with the Canonical Livepatch Service that lets developers easily apply the latest security patches in their applications without rebooting the machine, minimal installation support so they won't end up with a bloated OS, full Snap integration for easy installation of third-party apps they need, including Slack, Spotify, and Skype among numerous others, and automatic rollback of secure versions in case of issues.

The Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) pre-installed is now available for purchase in the US with a price tag starting at $1,049.99 USD for the FullHD model, and it's coming to various parts of Europe next month. The Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition is part of Dell's Project Sputnik initiative which was first launched six years ago with the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) operating system pre-installed.
